Quito is a city filled with history and culture. It is known for its impressive colonial architecture but also has much to offer visitors in terms of nature. If you're looking for things to do in Quito, plenty of options exist. Whether your looking for an outdoor excursion or a day in the city, we've got you covered.
The City of Quito
You can take a walking tour through the historic center, then runs along a parkway from the Basilica to Plaza Grande to Plaza Santo Domingo and learn about Quito's history or visit museums like the Museo Casa Alabado.
Visit the domes of the cathedral or take a tour of the city's first brewery.
Ascend the towers of the basilica or learn more about fine aroma cocoa on a guided tour.
You can also visit the famous Equator monument.
If the weather is nice, don't miss the opportunity to observe the city from the cable car (Teleferico).
Hiking near Quito
Hiking near Quito is one of the best ways to explore the city without leaving it. There are several different hikes that you can take, from an easy stroll up a mountain to a more strenuous hike to the top of the Pinchincha, Cotopaxi, Cayambe or Ilinisas.
The best hikes near Quito are located in the area between Quito and Cotopaxi, where you can find beautiful scenery, lots of Volcanoes, and even some rivers and Waterfalls.
We recommend starting on one of these trails:
Teleferico de Quito.
(Quito Cable Car) you can enjoy walks from very easy to more demanding ones, such as the summit of Ruco Pichincha. There are different trails for those looking for a low-impact sport and at the same time marvel at the view of the city, more than 4,000 meters above sea level, or admire the flora and fauna of the place.
The weather can change suddenly, so it is advisable to wear appropriate clothing, a windbreaker jacket, non-slip footwear, comfortable clothes that protect from possible rain and cold wind.
Do not forget if you want to reach the summit of Rucu Pichincha it is best to do it as early as possible.
Condor Machay Waterfall Trail
This is a really beautiful and easy hike not far from Quito. A great option if you are looking for a day trip. The trail is easy to follow and it only takes about 90 minutes to reach the Condor Machay Waterfall, walking very slowly and taking lots of pictures along the way. The first view of the waterfall is breathtaking!
Pasochoa Nature Reserve
Located just outside of Quito. This reserve has multiple hiking trails that go through primary montane forests and then reach the pine forests and the summit. If you like adventure you can also camp here.
Volcán Cotopaxi Day Tour
One of the favorite one day excursions from Quito is to climb the Cotopaxi glacier, the second highest volcano in Ecuador. The hike starts at the carpark located at an altitude of 4500 meters and ends at the Rivas refuge at 4800 meters.
Don't forget to bring plenty of warm clothes and try to acclimatize a few days before attempting the climb.
Volcán Quilotoa Day Tour
The easiest way to visit Quilotoa is on a day trip. The route to Quilotoa passes through some of the most spectacular Andean landscapes in the country, such as Tigua and Zumbahua, so photo stops are a must.
But if you are more of an adventurous hiker, we recommend doing the route from Sigchos to Quilotoa in 3 days.
